Access to services
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people with disabilities have less access to healthcare services. The lack of access to a wide range of public and private services is one of the restrictions to participation that this group of people experience in our society.
According to the WHO, the main barriers to access to healthcare services are high financial costs, a limited supply of services, physical barriers or obstacles and inadequate skills or knowledge of health staff.
The United Nations Convention states that, in order for people with disabilities to live independently and fully participate in all aspects of life, appropriate measures must be adopted to ensure access for people with disabilities, on an equal basis with others, to the physical environment, transportation, information and communication systems and technologies, and to other services and facilities open to the public for public use, both in urban and rural areas (art. 9).
